Managing Allergic
Rhinitis Triggers

Managing allergic rhinitis triggers

Allergic rhinitis is a condition that develops when the body comes into contact with a substance that causes an allergy. These substances, such as pollen, are called allergens. Allergens trigger an allergic reaction, with symptoms that can include runny or itchy nose, sneezing and red, watery eyes. In allergic rhinitis, these triggers can be found in the air. For more information on allergic rhinitis, read the article What is Allergic Rhinitis?

One of the main ways to take control of allergic rhinitis is to successfully avoid the allergens that trigger the problem. This can be easier said than done, but simple changes can significantly reduce your exposure to allergens.

  • Checking the forecast for pollen counts in the paper or on the news, and staying indoors with windows closed when the pollen level is high.
  • Modifying your garden to include low-allergen plants and replacing grass with paved or concrete areas.
  • Avoiding drying sheets or clothing outside, use a clothes dryer instead.
  • Take antihistamine medication before going outside during pollen season.

For perennial rhinitis, try the following:

  • House dust-mites like to live in bedding and soft furnishings. So if allergies are caused by dust-mites then use allergen-proof covers for mattresses and pillows, wash bedding every two weeks at a high temperature (54◦C) and dry in a hot dryer. Also, use a de-humidifier or air conditioner to keep humidity low, avoid wall-to-wall carpeting, and use a high efficiency particulate filter (HEPA) vacuum cleaner.
  • If an allergy is caused by pets, try and keep the animal out of the house as much as possible, opt for uncarpeted floors, and vacuum with a HEPA vacuum cleaner.  As an alternative, it may be better to give your pet a new home.

Naturally, avoiding triggers isn’t always possible, so you may need some extra help to keep symptoms under control and let you get on with life. Read the article What is Allergic Rhinitis? if you want to find out more about the different medications available.
